Residents escape townhouse fire in Reston

RESTON, Va. (WUSA9) -- Five people are without homes after a townhouse fire spread to an adjacent home in Reston on Monday.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department officials say at approximately 4:15 p.m. firefighters arrived at a townhouse in the 2000 block of Golf Course Drive to see heavy smoke and fire coming from the back of the home. The residents had already escaped unharmed, say officials.

The firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes, according to fire officials. Some of the fire extended into the townhouse next door.

Five people from both townhouses have been displaced, say officials. Red Cross support was offered but declined.

The damage is estimated at $180,000, say officials.

The fire started on the exterior rear deck, according to officials, and is under investigation.
