Catherine Frels Nominated for Best Actress Award

Catherine Frels of Washington, D.C., has been nominated for an Indie Soap Award for her role in “Thurston,” an online Western drama series. “Thurston” tells the story about residents of a remote mining town in the Kansas Ozarks and their struggle for survival. Frels portrays Maggie Callaway, a pioneering and emotionally complex character seeking a new chance at life in the untamed West.

Reston Artist Featured in One-Woman Show that Opens January 17

Reston, Va. -- The Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) and the Hyatt Regency Reston are proud to present accomplished Virginia artist Dana Ann Scheurer in a one-woman show being presented at the Market Street Bar and Grill from January 17 thru April 16, 2012. The artist reception sponsored by the Hyatt Regency Reston will be held on Monday, January 30, from 5-7 pm.

Dana Ann Scheurer’s work is very familiar to Reston and all of Northern Virginia, as this is her fourth one woman show presented by GRACE. She has exhibited in all 20 highly regarded Northern Virginia fine arts festivals and has been juried member of GRACE since 1981.

FCPS Teen Chefs to Receive Cooking Tools

Middle school students from Glasgow and Thoreau Middle Schools will receive a variety of cooking tools so they can practice their newly-learned cooking skills at home at the closing reception of the Teen Chefs on the Move! program on Thursday, January 5, at 1:30 p.m. at Chesterbrook Residences in Falls Church. Glasgow and Thoreau Middle Schools are Fairfax County public schools.

Celtic Band to Play at Sully Holiday Concert

Audiences at Sully Historic Site in Chantilly will be treated to a performance by one of the top-rated pan-Celtic musical groups in the world, IONA, on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 per seat.

IONA’s Scottish fiddling, driving percussion and strong vocals have created a large following around the mid-Atlantic region since the four member band formed in1986. Their shows feature original acoustic arrangements of traditional Celtic music from the British Isles, Ireland, Brittan and Galicia, and the band shares the history and cultural background of the music with audiences. The band members play multiple instruments and encourage audiences to clap and dance, creating a fun and lively atmosphere.

First Virginia Community Bank Sponsors First Washington West Film Festival

Reston, VA - First Virginia Community Bank (FVCbank) was a sponsor for the inaugural 2011 Washington West Film Festival, which took place on November 3-5, in Reston and Herndon, VA. Michelle Haley, Vice President at FVCbank, served on the planning team put together by the Reston Association to help market and promote the film festival to the Metro DC community. Proceeds from the festival went to Operation Blessing International, which provides disaster relief.

Brad Russell, the festival’s creator and executive director, screened and selected 23 independent films, which were shown during the three-day festival. More than a dozen of the film’s directors and writers were present for Q&A’s after the films.
