The coolest Brussel sprouts you'll ever see!

"What in the world is that?"  Bearing more resemblance to a Medieval torture device than a vegetable, it is no wonder people are confused!  Finding Brussel sprouts on the stalk in a grocery store is very rare, although my local Trader Joe's has been carrying them each fall for the past several years.

Take a chance:  buy one if you can.  The first time you bring this strange-looking product home, your family (especially the kids!) will be amazed and intrigued.  And if you prepare it using these easy directions,  the delicious taste will win everyone over.

Snap or cut the individual Brussel sprouts off the stalk.  Remove any wilted or coarse leaves and wash the heads.  If the heads are large, cut in half--otherwise leave them whole.  Place in a sturdy baking dish, drizzle with two tablespoons olive oil, and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon salt and pepper.

Distracted Driving Awareness & Summonses on the Rise

From the Fairfax County Police Department:

In an effort to increase public awareness on the dangers of distracted driving, police launched an intensive enforcement and education effort September 10; and they’re getting results.

There was a 66 percent increase in citations written for failure to pay full time and attention (and texting while driving) in 2010 compared to the same time period in 2008. Police have issued 7,165 summonses for these offenses this year compared to 4,305 in 2008.

Help Fight Hunger in the Community

Use Caution When Burning Candles

The following was sent to us by Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department:

Candles can provide ambiance and add warmth and coziness to a home. Candles are also often used when severe weather causes a power outage, leaving homeowners in the dark. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, approximately 17,400 candle-related fires occurred in homes annually. Approximately 180 deaths and 1,575 injuries are attributed to candle-related fires. On average, one home candle fire is reported every 34 minutes.

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department recommends residents use products such as battery-operated or electric candles and flashlights. If residents elect to use open-flame candles, follow these recommended safety tips:
