This was sent to us by Christopher Copley of Volunteer Fairfax:

Fairfax County, VA – Registration opens on September 20 for this year’s VolunteerFest®, to be held on Saturday, October 23, 2010. Over 1,500 volunteers are needed at area nonprofits, schools and parks to complete 31 projects on this county-wide day of service, held in conjunction with national “Make a Difference Day.” Individuals, families, corporations and civic groups are encouraged to participate.

The 16th annual VolunteerFest® encompasses a variety of volunteer projects, including assembling care packages for troops, entertaining seniors, creating wildlife habitats, painting houses and beautifying libraries inside and out across Fairfax County.

“In this time of economic distress, we should realize that service is a solution to some our toughest challenges and volunteers are needed now more than ever,” says Jeanne Sanders, executive director of Volunteer Fairfax.

Favorite Restaurant

So, I have been in Chicago for the past few days getting out and checking out the sites - it is crazy how much that town has changed since I lived there. It’s always good to get back to my roots and the food there – unreal. I forget how many great restaurants there are out there and that is probably because I spend my life in one. So, I need some help. I don’t have much time to get out so I need some recommendations for some of Virginia and DC’s best restaurants. Any type of food, any type of ambiance – I just want to know what the next place is that I should try. Hook a brother up.

Also, in case you want to follow me further, check out my blog at http://stevenlukisblog.wordpress.com/. Look forward to seeing you there.

Bluemont Hosts Its 41st Annual Country Fair This Weekend

This Saturday and Sunday, September 18-19, the Bluemont Cititzens Association invites "neighbors" from surrounding communities to join them for a country fair. The fair, a tradition of 41 years, is held in the center of Bluemont, a quaint and delightful village in the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains.

The fair offers more than thirty types of attractions and is sure to please everyone in your family. You'll find juried crafters and live demonstrations of historic crafts. Ladies from towns all around will bring home-baked goods to please your palate, and there are even pie and pickle—yes, I said pickle—making contests. There is an abundance of live music, and your children will also be entertained with games and fun especially for them.
