From the VA Special Olympics:

If you’ve ever played sports, you know what it’s like to be cheered on by a crowd.  The applause, the shouts of encouragement, the adrenaline rush.  Now imagine that same swim meet, that same soccer tournament, that same football game – but without the fans.

We believe it’s truly not as special without fans – and that goes for any sports competition, including Special Olympics.  So we need you to “Volunteer to Cheer” at this year’s Special Olympics Virginia Winter Championships, Jan. 13-14 in Northern Virginia.  Spend two hours – or all day! – showing your enthusiasm for more than 65 athletes from across Virginia who will go for the gold in speed skating.

Speed skating will take place at SkateQuest, located at 1800 Michael Faraday Court in Reston, with competition from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13 and from 8 a.m. to noon Friday, Jan. 14. Sign up today! We promise you will see that our athletes are deserving of your applause and support.  Feel free to dress up in your most fanatic costume or paint your face to show your spirit, too!

In addition, more than 50 athletes from across the Commonwealth will hit the lanes at the Bowl America in Dranesville during the event. Presented by Booz Allen Hamilton with additional support from Virginia Knights of Columbus, University of Phoenix and Sheetz, Winter Championships is one of seven state-level competitions offered by Special Olympics Virginia.
